Business listings are currently free

FindABrit is still growing, and we don’t believe businesses should have to pay to appear in a directory before we’ve built an audience worth paying for.

That’s why approved business listings are currently completely free.

Businesses can apply to join FindABrit and, once approved, create their business listing without paying a penny while we build the directory and its audience.

There is no subscription to start, no payment information is required to apply and no charge for creating an approved business listing at the moment.

What happens when FindABrit becomes paid?

Once FindABrit has built enough traffic to provide businesses with genuine value, we intend to introduce a small monthly charge for standard business listings.

The price and what’s included will be made clear before anybody is asked to subscribe.

There won’t be a surprise bill. Businesses already listed on FindABrit will be given advance notice before paid listings begin and will be able to decide whether they want to continue.

We will not simply start charging you. You’ll need to actively choose to continue with a paid listing and authorise the recurring payment yourself.

If you decide not to continue, no payment will be taken. Your business listing will become inactive, but your ordinary FindABrit account and listing information can remain in place.

If you decide to return later, you won’t need to apply again or build your listing from scratch. You can use your existing account and listing, subject to any review required before the listing is republished.

Why charge at all?

I’d love to keep business listings free forever, but if FindABrit grows, so will the cost and work involved in running it.

Hosting, development, security, maintenance, promotion and the time involved in reviewing applications and listings all have to be paid for somewhere.

The aim isn’t to make businesses pay simply because we can. It’s to make FindABrit sustainable enough to keep improving it, promoting it and bringing more people to the businesses listed here.

And I think there’s an important difference between charging a fair amount for something that provides genuine value and squeezing businesses for every penny possible.

Simple and affordable

FindABrit isn’t being built around expensive memberships, complicated packages or making businesses pay increasingly large amounts simply to remain visible.

Some established business directories and similar platforms can cost considerably more each month, particularly when additional features or greater visibility are involved.

That’s not what we want FindABrit to become.

Small businesses already have enough bills. We don’t believe in building something around supporting British businesses and then using its success as an excuse to squeeze as much money as possible from the businesses using it.

The principle is simple: keep the standard business listing affordable and make sure we’re providing something worth paying for.

Complimentary listings

From time to time, FindABrit may choose to give a business complimentary listing access.

A complimentary business receives the same standard listing without having to pay the normal listing charge while that complimentary status remains active.

If we’ve granted your business complimentary access, we’ll tell you directly. There’s nothing to pay and no subscription to set up.

Complimentary access doesn’t change the standards businesses are expected to meet or give a listing preferential treatment within the directory.

What does a FindABrit business listing include?

An approved business can create a listing showcasing its business, what it offers and the ways potential customers can get in touch.

FindABrit isn’t limited to businesses with a traditional shop or premises. Businesses might serve a particular town or area, work across Britain, sell entirely online or combine several of these.

The directory is intended to cover everything from tradespeople, independent retailers and professional services to accommodation providers, farmers, food producers, manufacturers, makers and online businesses.

Business applications are reviewed before they’re accepted, and completed listings are reviewed before they’re published.

Why do businesses have to apply?

FindABrit isn’t intended to be an enormous, completely open directory where anybody can create anything and it immediately appears on the site.

Businesses apply first so we can keep some oversight over who and what appears in the directory.

Applications that don’t meet our Listing Criteria can be declined, and businesses that later cease to meet those standards or misuse the site can have their access or listing removed.

That doesn’t mean acceptance onto FindABrit is a guarantee or endorsement of a business, its products or its services. Customers should always carry out their own checks before making a purchase, booking a service or handing over money.

It’s simply about trying to build a useful directory with some standards rather than chasing the biggest possible listing count.

What if I no longer want my listing?

Businesses aren’t locked in.

While listings are free, there’s nothing to cancel financially.

Once paid listings are introduced, businesses with a recurring subscription will be able to cancel it. Cancelling stops future recurring renewals.

Where you’ve already paid for a period of listing access, your listing may remain active until that paid period ends before becoming inactive.

Your account and listing information don’t need to be deleted simply because you stop paying for a business listing.

If you later decide to return, you can reactivate your business listing using your existing account, subject to the applicable listing terms and any review required before republication.

What if a payment fails?

We don’t want a single failed card payment to immediately knock somebody’s business off the directory.

Where appropriate, we’ll allow a reasonable grace period so the payment problem can be corrected.

If the payment still isn’t resolved after the applicable grace period, the business listing may be taken offline.

The account and listing information can remain in place so the business can return without starting again.

General membership stays free

Business listings and ordinary use of FindABrit are two different things.

Visitors can browse and search the directory without paying, and general member accounts are free.

We want as many people as possible discovering and supporting the businesses listed here. Charging people to search for them would rather defeat the point.

Built to grow together

If FindABrit succeeds, it will be because businesses choose to be part of it and people choose to use it.

That relationship should remain fair on both sides.

Businesses should receive genuine value for anything they’re asked to pay, and FindABrit should be able to cover the costs of maintaining, improving and promoting the directory.

That’s the model we’re trying to build.

Supporting our own shouldn’t just be a slogan. It should apply to how we do business too.
